reading material

Can anyone recommend a good, comprehensive book on meteorology?

More and more I am finding myself wanting to better understand the five or six weather forecasts and dicussions that I read every day. But I am not sure what is a good text for people with no formal training in meteorology, but who are intelligent and generally capable of grokking the mechanics that influence weather patterns.

Suggestions?

Happy buy nothing day!

  1. There’s a pocket book that looks a lot like the books put out by the Audubon society for identifying birds, but it’s all about cloud formations, winds, and weather. I can’t remember the name, but it told me the name of my favorite weather effect: Crepuscular Rays.
